The Gateway to the World
Guangdong Province has the largest Huang population in China and has been the primary source of overseas Huang migration for over 150 years. If your Huang family is in the Americas, there's a high probability they originated from Guangdong.
Historical Overview
Guangdong Province has the largest Huang population in China today. The province became a major Huang center during the Tang and Song dynasties as migrants from Fujian and Jiangxi settled in the Pearl River Delta. The province is home to two distinct Huang communities: the Punti (本地, "locals") who arrived earlier and speak Cantonese, and the Hakka (客家, "guests") who arrived later and speak Hakka dialect. Guangdong's coastal location made it a major source of overseas migration. Today, most Huang families in North America, and many in Southeast Asia, trace their roots to Guangdong. Major Migration Waves: • Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE): Initial settlements from Fujian • Southern Song (1127-1279 CE): Major influx from Jiangxi • Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE): Development of Pearl River Delta • Qing Dynasty (1644-1912 CE): Mass emigration to Americas
