The Global Huang Family DNA Project has reached a significant milestone with over 10,000 participants contributing their DNA samples for genealogical research. Launched in 2018, the project is now the largest surname-specific genetic genealogy initiative in East Asia.

Analysis of the collected data has identified over 30 distinct paternal lineages within the Huang (黄) surname group, reflecting the complex history of surname adoption, clan formation, and population movement across China over the past three millennia. The most geographically widespread lineage connects Huang families in Hubei, Fujian, Guangdong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia through a common ancestor estimated to have lived approximately 900 years ago.

The project has facilitated over 2,000 direct family connections between participants who discovered previously unknown relatives through genetic matching. Many of these connections bridge geographic and political boundaries, linking Huang families in mainland China with descendants of emigrants who left China centuries ago.

Future plans for the project include expanding sample collection in underrepresented regions such as southwestern China and the Philippines, and integrating ancient DNA analysis from archaeological sites associated with the historical Huang state. The project welcomes new participants and provides testing kits at subsidised prices for qualifying individuals.
