A groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Genetic Genealogy has revealed previously unknown connections between Huang family lineages across East and Southeast Asia, thanks to advanced Y-chromosome DNA analysis.

The study, conducted by researchers at Fudan University in collaboration with the Global Huang Family DNA Project, analysed over 8,000 Y-DNA samples from men surnamed Huang (黄) across China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The results identified 23 distinct paternal lineages, with the most common haplogroup (O2a2b1) appearing in approximately 35% of participants.

One of the most significant findings was the discovery of a shared genetic marker between Huang families in Fujian Province and those in the Malaysian state of Johor, confirming oral histories of migration from the Quanzhou region to Southeast Asia during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Another notable result connected Huang families in Hubei Province with those in Guangdong through a lineage traceable to the Song Dynasty.

These findings complement traditional Jiapu (family register) records and provide scientific validation for many long-held beliefs about Huang clan migration patterns. The research team has made the anonymised dataset available to qualified researchers through a secure academic database.
