A major new digital archive dedicated to Huang (黄) family genealogical records has been launched, providing researchers and family members with unprecedented access to historical documents spanning over 2,000 years.
The archive, developed through a collaboration between university research centres in China, Taiwan, and Singapore, contains scanned copies of over 5,000 Jiapu (family registers) from Huang clans across Fujian, Guangdong, Hubei, and other provinces. Many of these documents were previously accessible only to scholars with physical access to library special collections.
Advanced search functionality allows users to search by generation poem characters, ancestral village names, migration dates, and individual names. The platform also integrates mapping tools that visualise Huang family migration patterns across China and into Southeast Asia over the past several centuries.
The archive is free to access and includes bilingual (Chinese-English) interfaces. Future updates will incorporate DNA project data, allowing families to cross-reference genealogical records with genetic matching results. Researchers interested in contributing additional records can submit materials through the platform's upload portal.
