Tanghao (堂号)

Hall name or clan designation. A two or three-character phrase that identifies a specific lineage within a surname. Used on ancestral tablets, tombstones, and family genealogies.

Jiapu (家谱)

jiā pǔ

Family genealogy book. A record of a family's lineage, including names of ancestors, biographical information, generation names, migration history, and clan rules. Traditionally updated every 30-60 years.

Example:

The Jiangxia Huang Jiapu of 1875 contains 342 pages of lineage records.

Zupu (族谱)

Clan genealogy book. Similar to jiapu but covers a broader clan rather than a single family line. Often contains rules, traditions, and historical records of the entire clan.

Example:

Beizi (辈字)

bèi zì

Generation name. A character from a poem that is shared by all members of the same generation in a family. Used to identify one's position in the lineage.

Example:

If your name is Huang Dàdao, 'Dà' (大) might be your generation name.

A poem composed of 20-40 characters, each character representing a generation. Families use these poems to name children in sequence over generations.

shén zhǔ pái

A wooden tablet inscribed with the name of a deceased ancestor. Believed to house the ancestor's spirit for worship. Always includes the tanghao.

Example:

Punti (本地)

Literally 'local' - refers to Cantonese-speaking Huang families who were early settlers in Guangdong, as opposed to later Hakka migrants.
