Glossary of Huang Genealogy Terms
A comprehensive dictionary of terms used in Chinese genealogy, with specific focus on Huang surname research. Includes pronunciation, definitions, and examples.
Tanghao (堂号)
Hall name or clan designation. A two or three-character phrase that identifies a specific lineage within a surname. Used on ancestral tablets, tombstones, and family genealogies.

Jiapu (家谱)
Family genealogy book. A record of a family's lineage, including names of ancestors, biographical information, generation names, migration history, and clan rules. Traditionally updated every 30-60 years.
The Jiangxia Huang Jiapu of 1875 contains 342 pages of lineage records.
Zupu (族谱)
Clan genealogy book. Similar to jiapu but covers a broader clan rather than a single family line. Often contains rules, traditions, and historical records of the entire clan.
The Huang Clan Zupu of Guangdong documents 15 generations.
Beizi (辈字)
Generation name. A character from a poem that is shared by all members of the same generation in a family. Used to identify one's position in the lineage.
If your name is Huang Dàdao, 'Dà' (大) might be your generation name.
Generation Poem (辈字诗)
A poem composed of 20-40 characters, each character representing a generation. Families use these poems to name children in sequence over generations.

Jiangxia (江夏)
The ancestral homeland of the largest Huang lineage. Originally a commandery established in 201 BCE in modern-day Hubei Province. Over 70% of Huang people trace ancestry here.
The Jiangxia Commandery was centered on modern Wuhan.
Ancestral Hall (宗祠)
A building dedicated to the worship of a clan's ancestors. Contains ancestral tablets, records, and serves as a gathering place for clan ceremonies.
The Huang Ancestral Hall in Quanzhou dates to the Ming Dynasty.
Ancestral Tablet (神主牌)
A wooden tablet inscribed with the name of a deceased ancestor. Believed to house the ancestor's spirit for worship. Always includes the tanghao.
A tablet might read: 江夏堂 黄公讳香之神位
Qingming Festival (清明节)
Tomb Sweeping Day, typically April 4-6. The most important annual observance for ancestor worship. Families visit graves, clean tombstones, and make offerings.
Huang families gather at ancestral graves each Qingming.
Punti (本地)
Literally 'local' - refers to Cantonese-speaking Huang families who were early settlers in Guangdong, as opposed to later Hakka migrants.
Punti Huang families have lived in the Pearl River Delta for centuries.
Hakka (客家)
Literally 'guest families' - a Han Chinese subgroup with distinct language and customs. Many Huang families are Hakka, particularly in Guangdong, Fujian, and Taiwan.
Hakka Huang families often have tanghao like Shaowu Tang.
Hokkien (闽南语)
Southern Min dialect spoken in Fujian, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. The Huang surname is pronounced 'Ng' or 'Oei' in Hokkien.

Romanization
The conversion of Chinese characters to Latin alphabet. Huang is romanized differently based on dialect: Huang (Mandarin), Wong (Cantonese), Ng (Hokkien), Huynh (Vietnamese).
The same surname 黄 can be spelled Huang, Wong, Ng, Oei, Wee, Hwang, or Huynh.
Y-DNA Haplogroup
A genetic marker passed from father to son. Used to trace paternal lineage and confirm genealogical connections. Different Huang lineages may have different haplogroups.
Many Jiangxia Huang males belong to haplogroup O2a1b1a1a1b1.
Jinshi (进士)
The highest degree in the imperial examination system. Achieving jinshi status brought great honor to one's family and clan. Over 3,000 Huang achieved this.
Huang Tingjian passed the jinshi exam in 1067 CE.
Diaspora
The dispersion of Huang people from China to other parts of the world. Major diaspora communities exist in Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Americas, and Europe.
Over 8 million Huang live outside mainland China.
Twenty-Four Paragons of Filial Piety (二十四孝)
Classic Chinese text describing examples of filial devotion. Huang Xiang is one of the 24 paragons for warming his father's bed in winter.

Three Character Classic (三字经)
Traditional Chinese educational text used for centuries. Contains the famous reference to Huang Xiang's filial piety.
This text was memorized by Chinese schoolchildren for 700+ years.
